Title: Pathaan

Genre: Action-Thriller

1. Logline

A dedicated Indian intelligence agent assembles a covert team of injured ex-soldiers to stop a rogue mercenary from unleashing a deadly virus on India, forcing him to confront past betrayals, forbidden love, and a nemesis who was once a patriot himself.

2. Concept

Pathaan is a high-stakes action-thriller that follows the journey of Pathaan, a highly skilled and patriotic agent of India's Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). After surviving life-threatening missions and personal losses, he builds the Joint Operations and Covert Research (J.O.C.R.), a unit of ex-soldiers who were forced to retire due to injuries or trauma but are eager to serve their country again. Together, they face Jim, a former Indian agent turned rogue mercenary, who plans to unleash a mutated smallpox virus on India. Amidst the chaos, Pathaan reunites with Rubina "Rubai" Mohsin, a Pakistani ISI agent and former love interest, challenging his loyalties and emotions as they must work together to prevent a catastrophic attack.

3. Theme

  • Redemption and Second Chances: The story explores how individuals discarded by society find purpose and reclaim their identities.

  • Patriotism vs. Personal Loyalties: The conflict between duty to one's country and personal relationships tests the characters' morals.

  • Betrayal and Trust: In a world of espionage, the thin line between ally and enemy highlights the complexity of trust.

  1. Premise for Pathaan:

Premise: A decorated yet emotionally scarred intelligence agent, Pathaan, must confront his own past failures, navigate shifting allegiances, and thwart a rogue mercenary's deadly bioweapon plot, all while rediscovering his humanity and love in a world defined by betrayal, loss, and sacrifice.

Theme: In a world of shifting loyalties and moral ambiguity, the true cost of patriotism, duty, and heroism is often personal sacrifice, and the line between enemy and ally can blur in the face of survival.

  1. Throughline for the Theme:

At the heart of Pathaan is the question of sacrifice—whether personal, moral, or national. Pathaan, a man who has spent his life in service to his country, must navigate a murky world where the greatest threats come not just from enemies but from his own internal struggles. Every scene, every decision he faces, speaks to the theme: the cost of loyalty, the weight of choices, and the personal toll of living by the sword. Whether it’s his battle to outwit a rogue agent like Jim or his complicated relationship with Rubai, each plot point reinforces the emotional journey of a man seeking redemption in a world where heroism often comes with a steep price.

  1. Application of Storytelling Craft:

Scenes and Scene Execution: Each scene should reflect the theme of sacrifice and moral ambiguity. Whether it's an action-packed chase or an intimate conversation, every moment reveals Pathaan's internal struggle and moral questioning. For example:

  • Action Sequences: These should not be just physical battles but also moral ones, where Pathaan's every fight, every risk, is laden with personal stakes. The question of "What am I willing to sacrifice?" should pulse through his every move.

  • Character Dialogues: Conversations should reflect this tension, where characters discuss their past decisions, future goals, and the price they've paid. Pathaan's dynamic with Rubai, in particular, should constantly tug at the thin line between love and betrayal, service and self-preservation.

Plotting: The plot must tighten around the thematic core—Pathaan's journey of redemption and self-discovery. As the stakes rise, the external conflict (Jim's bioweapon threat) should mirror the internal (Pathaan’s need to reconcile with his past failures). Every twist and turn must circle back to this central theme: What is Pathaan willing to sacrifice to stop Jim, and can he regain his humanity in the process?

Scene Construction: Every beat should layer in meaning—whether it’s a small character moment or an explosive set piece. For instance, when Pathaan decides to trust Rubai again after her betrayal, the scene must be drenched in doubt and unresolved emotional tension, keeping the audience at the edge of their seats. The decisions that Pathaan makes are not just tactical—they're existential, about who he is and what he will become.

The premise provides the emotional and thematic engine for a cohesive, engaging story that is believable, emotionally resonant, and intellectually compelling—the kind of storytelling that gets a project greenlit.

Deeper Dive into Character Profiles for the Action-Thriller Script "Pathaan"

a. Pathaan (Protagonist)

  • Backstory:

    • Found abandoned as an infant in a cinema hall, Pathaan was raised in an orphanage, juvenile center, and remand home. He struggled through a tough childhood where survival was the priority. Despite these challenges, the kindness of a teacher in the orphanage ignited within him a sense of purpose. That nurturing pushed him to join the Indian Army, where he excelled in covert missions and rose through the ranks. His formative years taught him resilience, but also left scars, with deep-seated abandonment issues and a constant quest for belonging. His heroic actions in Afghanistan, where he saved an entire village, earned him his name, "Pathaan," and cemented his legacy as a selfless warrior. However, he carries the burden of trauma from witnessing death and destruction during his missions. A failed mission in Myanmar leaves him with physical injuries but even deeper emotional scars, leading him to form the Joint Operations and Covert Research (J.O.C.R) unit—his way of giving soldiers who had lost their place in society a chance to continue serving.

  • Internal Goals:

    • Pathaan seeks to find peace within himself, healing from his deep-rooted fear of abandonment and failure. He wants to believe in a world where his efforts and sacrifices truly matter, and where he can finally stop running from his inner demons. His fight is to reconcile his violent, chaotic life with his yearning for personal redemption.

  • External Goals:

    • Pathaan’s external goal is to protect his nation and dismantle the Raktbeej conspiracy, a biological threat that could decimate India’s population. His primary mission is to stop Jim, the rogue former Indian agent, and save countless lives from the mutated smallpox virus. Along the way, he must also protect his love interest, Rubina, and ensure the safety of his team.

  • Motivations:

    • Patriotism drives Pathaan—his fierce loyalty to his country is unshakable. He is also motivated by a need to atone for his past failures and the lives he couldn’t save. The camaraderie of his unit and his duty to them keeps him going, as does his growing love for Rubina, though he struggles to let anyone close.

  • Conflicts:

    • Pathaan faces constant internal conflict between his desire for personal peace and his role as a warrior. His fear of abandonment clashes with his yearning for intimacy with Rubina. Externally, he is up against a highly skilled enemy in Jim, a former brother-in-arms turned villain, who forces him to question his own loyalty and values. Pathaan is also in conflict with his superiors, who push him to execute missions that take a toll on his conscience, forcing him to walk the thin line between justice and revenge.

b. Rubina "Rubai" Mohsin (Love Interest and ISI Agent)

  • Backstory:

    • Born into a military family in Pakistan, Rubina has always been surrounded by duty and patriotism. Her father, a high-ranking military officer, instilled in her a deep sense of loyalty to her country, but her family dynamics were complex. Constantly overshadowed by her brothers, Rubina fought to prove herself in a male-dominated world. She became a top ISI agent through sheer determination, gaining a reputation for her sharp intellect and physical prowess. Rubina’s life took a complicated turn when she met Pathaan on a covert mission. Though their chemistry was undeniable, their roles as agents for rival nations made their connection fraught with tension. After learning of her country’s involvement in the Raktbeej conspiracy, Rubina finds herself torn between loyalty to her nation and her moral compass.

  • Internal Goals:

    • Rubina’s internal goal is to break free from the shackles of her nationalistic identity and find her own sense of right and wrong. She struggles with guilt over her country's actions and seeks redemption, aiming to reconcile her love for her homeland with the need to do what is morally right.

  • External Goals:

    • Rubina’s primary goal is to stop the Raktbeej virus from being deployed, even if it means going against her own agency. Her love for Pathaan complicates matters, as she also wants to protect him from harm, but doing so risks her career and family ties.

  • Motivations:

    • Rubina is driven by a desire to prove that she is more than just a cog in her country's military machine. Her complex feelings for Pathaan motivate her to seek justice beyond borders. She is also motivated by her desire to cleanse her conscience after discovering the unethical practices her agency is involved in.

  • Conflicts:

    • Rubina’s main internal conflict lies in her loyalty to her country versus her moral duty to stop the virus. Her feelings for Pathaan add another layer of complexity, as she constantly battles her emotions while trying to stay focused on the mission. Externally, she is in conflict with the ISI, which suspects her of betrayal. She also faces mistrust from Pathaan, as their nations are sworn enemies.

c. Jim (Antagonist)

  • Backstory:

    • Once one of the most decorated Indian agents, Jim was a rising star in R&AW. He was driven by his desire to protect India at all costs, but a mission went terribly wrong. His wife and child were killed in a terrorist attack orchestrated by enemies of the state. The agency's failure to protect his family broke him. Jim felt betrayed by the very institution he had given his life to serve. This personal tragedy pushed him to become a rogue mercenary, working for the highest bidder, regardless of national borders. Bitter and vengeful, he established Outfit X, a covert terror organization, and masterminded the Raktbeej conspiracy as his ultimate revenge against the Indian government.

  • Internal Goals:

    • Jim’s internal goal is to seek vengeance for the loss of his family, but deep down, he struggles with his guilt and unresolved grief. He convinces himself that his actions are justified, but underneath, there is a shattered man who feels abandoned by both his country and fate.

  • External Goals:

    • Jim’s external goal is to unleash the Raktbeej virus as an act of revenge against India. He believes that by creating chaos and destruction, he can expose the government’s failures and bring the system to its knees. He also seeks to personally defeat Pathaan, his former ally, whom he sees as a symbol of the system that wronged him.

  • Motivations:

    • Revenge and hatred drive Jim. He feels that by destroying India’s stability, he can finally make those in power feel the pain he has endured. His bitterness also makes him obsessed with proving that he is more intelligent and capable than Pathaan, whom he once admired.

  • Conflicts:

    • Jim is in constant conflict with himself, torn between his desire for vengeance and the haunting memories of his family. He believes that his love for them justifies his actions, but this creates an internal struggle between his lost humanity and the monstrous figure he has become. Externally, he is in direct conflict with Pathaan, whose values of duty and sacrifice clash with Jim’s philosophy of selfish vengeance. Jim is also at odds with his mercenary team, who don’t share his personal vendetta but are in it for the money.

d. Nandini Grewal (Mentor and Senior Officer)

  • Backstory:

    • Nandini grew up in a household where her father, a war veteran, believed that service to the country was paramount. From an early age, she was trained to be strong, resilient, and emotionally detached. Her analytical mind and leadership qualities saw her rise through the ranks of R&AW, where she became Pathaan’s mentor. Nandini played a key role in helping him develop the Joint Operations and Covert Research unit, and they share a deep bond of mutual respect. Her stoic demeanor hides her personal sacrifices—she never married or had a family, dedicating her life solely to the agency. She is one of the few people Pathaan trusts implicitly.

  • Internal Goals:

    • Nandini’s internal goal is to ensure that she leaves behind a legacy of capable and ethical agents, even as she grapples with the loneliness that her career dedication has brought. She seeks peace in knowing that she has done everything she could to protect her country.

  • External Goals:

    • Nandini’s primary goal is to see the success of the J.O.C.R and ensure that the team can stop Jim’s Raktbeej conspiracy. She is also determined to protect Pathaan, who is like a son to her, and ensure that he fulfills his potential as a leader.

  • Motivations:

    • Nandini is motivated by her sense of duty and responsibility. Her dedication to her work is unshakeable, and she believes that her life's purpose is to safeguard India’s future. Her personal bond with Pathaan drives her to push him toward becoming the leader she knows he can be.

  • Conflicts:

    • Nandini’s internal conflict stems from her inability to let go of her work and her emotional detachment from those around her. She knows she is sacrificing her personal happiness, but believes it is necessary for the greater good. Externally, she is in conflict with the bureaucratic and political elements of R&AW, who often clash with her direct and uncompromising style. She also faces tension with Pathaan, who occasionally rebels against her rigid adherence to rules.

These richly layered characters, each with their own internal and external conflicts, goals, and motivations, provide a potent framework for scenes and dialogues. These conflicts will manifest in key moments throughout the story, heightening both emotional and intellectual engagement with the audience.

The layered characters and their intertwined fates create a tapestry that is believable and resonates on an intellectual and emotional level. This approach ensures that the film is not only thrilling but also meaningful, leaving audiences engaged and contemplating the moral ambiguities presented.

  1. Cold Open: Afghanistan Flashback - Edge-of-the-Seat Action Sequence

This opening sequence sets the tone for the film, combining edge-of-the-seat action with emotional depth, making it clear from the outset that "Pathaan" is not just about thrills, but about the cost of heroism and the price of war.

EXT. AFGHAN VILLAGE – DAY

The village lies at the base of a rugged, mountainous terrain. Dust clouds swirl through the air as villagers go about their daily lives. Children laugh, their voices echoing off the stone walls of houses. But there is an eerie stillness in the wind, a calm before the storm.

CUT TO:

EXT. AFGHAN HILLSIDE – DAY

A small, elite unit of Indian and U.S. soldiers, Pathaan among them, crouch low behind jagged rocks. Their faces are hardened, eyes scanning the horizon. Pathaan, wearing the fatigue of a man who’s seen too much, grips his rifle. He breathes steadily, but his gaze flickers with the tension of a man ready to charge into the fray.

SOLDIER 1 (whispers):

Missile sighted. ETA ten minutes.

Pathaan nods, his eyes narrowing. He turns to his squad commander.

PATHAAN (urgent, hushed):

We’re too close to that village. Evacuation won't happen in time.

The COMMANDER hesitates. Too much risk. Too many lives. Pathaan paces around him.

COMMANDER:

We hold our position. Orders are to wait.

Pathaan’s jaw tightens. His internal conflict swells. Lives versus orders. He can't just sit here.

PATHAAN (resolute):

Orders be damned.

Before the commander can react, Pathaan breaks from cover, racing down the hillside towards the village. His team watches, torn between following orders and following the man.

EXT. AFGHAN VILLAGE – CONTINUOUS

Pathaan sprints through the village, the weight of his boots kicking up clouds of dust. He grabs the arm of an elder woman, directing her toward safety.

PATHAAN (urgent, to villagers):

Go! Get to the mountains!

A mother clutches her child, her face pale with terror. Pathaan takes the child into his arms, a soft moment in the chaos.

Suddenly, BOOM—a distant explosion.

CUT TO:

EXT. SKY – DAY

A MISSILE launches, its fiery tail streaking across the sky. It arcs toward the village, cutting through the thin air with terrifying precision.

EXT. AFGHAN VILLAGE – CONTINUOUS

Pathaan looks up, his heart pounding. His mind races—there’s no time left. He spots a rusty, abandoned truck at the edge of the village.

EXT. TRUCK – DAY

Pathaan sprints to the truck, sliding into the driver’s seat. He smashes his hand against the ignition, praying for life in the battered machine. The engine roars to life—a moment of hope. He floors the gas pedal, the truck lurching forward toward the missile’s impact zone.

EXT. SKY – CONTINUOUS

The missile descends rapidly, its destructive force humming through the air. Pathaan is on a collision course, but his eyes are steady, his focus sharp.

INT. TRUCK – CONTINUOUS

BEEP BEEP BEEP—the missile’s tracking system locks onto the truck. Pathaan hears the whine of the incoming death, getting closer, faster.

Sweat beads on Pathaan’s forehead. The world slows, every second hanging in the balance. He grips the wheel tighter, accelerating. His heart pounds in his chest—he knows this is a one-way trip.

PATHAAN (murmuring to himself):

Hold on.

EXT. AFGHAN VILLAGE – DAY

Villagers, still scrambling for safety, watch in horror as the missile nears. Children cry, and mothers scream. The entire village seems to freeze.

The truck barrels through the village's narrow streets, debris flying everywhere. Pathaan jerks the wheel at the last second, veering sharply toward the incoming missile.

EXT. SKY – CONTINUOUS

At the last possible moment, the truck collides with the missile in mid-air, an explosion igniting a shockwave that ripples across the entire area.

CUT TO:

EXT. AFGHAN VILLAGE – CONTINUOUS

The explosion sends a massive shockwave through the village, shattering windows, and toppling walls. Dust and debris fill the air.

EXT. RUBBLE – CONTINUOUS

Pathaan is flung from the wreckage, his body crashing into the dirt with bone-jarring force. The world goes quiet—just the slow crackle of fire and the distant cries of the villagers.

INT. PATHAAN’S P.O.V. – DAY

Pathaan blinks, trying to focus. His vision swims, darkness closing in. The edges of his world blur, but in the distance, he sees the villagers—the very people he’s saved—emerging from the dust. One of them, a village elder, approaches, tears in his eyes.

VILLAGE ELDER (whispering in Pashto):

You are one of us now... Pathaan.

His world fades to black.

FADE TO:

EXT. AFGHANISTAN HILLSIDE – NIGHT

The night sky is vast, stars twinkling overhead. Pathaan lies in a makeshift bed, still unconscious, his body battered and broken. The villagers watch over him, caring for him, and keeping him alive as he drifts in and out of consciousness.

TITLE CARD:

"PATHAAN"

The camera pulls back from his face, revealing the sprawling Afghan landscape—vast, unforgiving, and teeming with life. In the distance, gunfire echoes.

________________________________________

This cold open establishes:

• Pathaan’s core conflict: His internal struggle with following orders versus his moral compass.

• His heroism: The lengths to which he will go to protect innocent lives, no matter the cost.

• The origin of his name: His earned respect among the people he saved.

• The stakes: An emotionally charged action sequence that introduces the stakes of the narrative—sacrifice, heroism, and the cost of violence.

You see the drift. We have established a framework rich in storytelling craft already to build on the rest of the sequences to complete the first draft of the script that is closer to getting greenlit.

Conclusion

Our creative collaboration with ChatGPT to reimagine Pathaan serves as a powerful case-in-point for how much better the movie could have been. The value of this collaboration lies not in replacing the filmmaker’s creative vision but in augmenting it, providing a fresh lens through which the storytelling craft can be sharpened and enhanced. We had written another article, “The AI Advantage: Harnessing ChatGPT to Enhance Storytelling and Filmmaking,” that captures the enormous value of such creative collaborations. Key assumptions for this collaboration include the filmmaker remaining in full control of their creativity, equipped with deep knowledge of how to break into a story idea and develop it with precision. The storytelling craft must be carefully woven into the process, ensuring every character, plot point, and narrative arc serves the overall theme and emotional engagement of the film. For filmmakers, the critical takeaway is this: ChatGPT can be a transformative ally when used by an eloquent storyteller who understands both the creative process and the technical nuances of the movie script development. This requires a solid foundation in prompt engineering in the storytelling domain to direct the AI effectively. We have developed this capability-building offering for you in our “AI Integration into Storytelling Workshop.” By embracing this creative collaboration with Generative AI, the Indian film industry can elevate its storytelling to new heights and meet the global standards of world-class filmmaking. The time to act is now—seize the potential of generative AI, refine your craft, and create the films that the world will remember.
